Methods of change: Sensory cartographies
Sensory cartography maps experiences and creates a visual representation as an alternative form of communication through an arts-based method to move beyond the limitations of words by offering alternative forms of communication to convey the depth and complexity of embodied experiences and emotions (Baerg, 2003, cited in Skop, 2016, p29). It represents other ways of knowing as a process through time and space in people's lives that are otherwise seen as separate and unconnected. This asset-based storytelling approach engages through art and reduces verbal barriers to express individuals' embodied experiences; living experiences interwoven within their body and, in turn, space and time.
The purpose of body mapping is to engage the participants to think beyond the envelope of the skin through a critical examination of the meaning of their unique experiences, which could not simply be achieved through conversation. I developed this workshop style to create inclusion [within my research] and alternative ways of understanding social contexts.
A biographical map can assist research by drawing symbols and selecting images that help to tell stories in specific places embedded in the broader ecology of life.
